Pros: – Relatively simple setup
– Good performance
– Nice features Cons: – Hardware RAID functions aren’t supported on Linux
– A bit finicky about how it’s handled Overall Review: Setup: running 4 16tb Seagate Barracuda Compute drives, connected to a Dell XPS 9560 laptop running Linux Mint, laptop is hardwired to Verizon CR1000a router.
I picked up this enclosure recently to do double-duty as an external storage solution for Nextcloud and storage for a Jellyfin media server. I wanted the two arrays to both run in RAID 1 mode, which this enclosure is supposed to be able to support. However, in following the directions closely, Linux Mint still saw these as four separate drives instead of two arrays. So I had to instead set them to single and run software RAID using Linux Mint. While I was hoping to not have to do it this way, they seem to be running fine.
A couple things I learned the hard way:
1) this must be connected directly to the laptop. Connecting to a hub which is connected to the laptop will not work.
2) The enclosure has a secondary USC-C input which could presumably be used (which would have been nice since the enclosure is taking the only USB-C slot on the laptop), however when I tried to use this, the enclosure froze and I wound up having to rebuild the arrays.
The manual, as you might expect, has the ESL thing going on. It would’ve been nice if it explicitly stated thing like needing to connect directly and the limitations of the ports.
After the initial learning curve and setbacks, this drive is now (knock on wood, salt over the shoulder, fingers crossed, wincing) …working as expected.
