  1. Jeff J.

Pros: Great Raid card that’s extremely Quick (would be perfect for lots of SSD’s)
Easy to Setup Cons: Requires airflow of chip or it will run hot. Overall Review: This was the first time that I’d used Hardware Raid instead of using software raid 0 or 1 in the years past. I built an HTPC with the hardware specs below. One thing to keep in mind is this card requires air flowing over the heatsink and it won’t passively cool with just the heatsink. I had read a bunch of raid card reviews on other high end raid cards that mentioned that high performance raid cards have a Linear Flow Rating of air that needs to pass through the heat sink . Without this movement of air the card will run very card and it may in fact damage it or it may throttle back the performance.
I booted my rig up and installed the LSI software and I started searching for a chip temperature. After about 10 minutes I found it and was shocked when it was already up to 92 C. I powered it down and sat a 140 mm Cougar fan I had next to it and it drops the temperature down to 60C. Part of the issue was the raid card was sandwiched between my sound card and video card. Even with removing all but my raid card it still easily reached 80+C. Being that I want to keep my video card, sound card, and my raid card in an mAtx board it presented me with some issues. I thinik I’ve found a solution using a pci extender high speed flex cable hooked to my sound card and mounted further down in the case, but I wont know until I receive the adapter. As far as cooling goes, you need to have a fan mounted on the raid heatsink or a fan in your case blowing directly on the heatsink. I purchased some Noctua 40mm and 60mm fans to make an adapater and mount them to the card. I haven’t mounted them yet but plan to in the weeks to come, for now I have that 140 mm fan jammed in the case which is cooling fine so far. I think one 60 mm fan mounted basically right on the lsi heatsink would provide enough cooling or maybe two of the 40 mm fans would.
    My PC consists of
    Intel I7-4771
    MSI Z87M Gaming (mtax board)
    Crucial 16gb DDR3 1600
    Crucial M500 512GB SSD
    6 Western digital 4TB Red’s in Raid 6
    EVGA 750 TI
Creative X-FI Xtreme Gamer Sound Card
    Fractal Node 605 HTPC Case
2 Corsair SP120 Quiet Fans (intake)
1 Fractal Node 120mm Fan (Intake)
    2 Silenx 80mm Fans (exhaust)
Now for the Raid 6 Specs (Running 6 WD Red 4tb drives) via CrystalDiskMark (1000MB)
    Read Writes

Pros: Controller is fast with very low access latency. Default setting of write-through without battery backup can be overridden to allow write-back.
Works with non server (Z68) motherboard.
1GB of cache can be used without BBU or CacheVault
Price is less at Newegg than any listing in Fleabay. Also price is less than matching OEM Intel controllers with the same chip. It is definitely much more expensive than using Intel chipset on the motherboard for RAID but there is a big difference in these 2 options.
All operations present in MegaRAID can be executed with scheduled tasks using CLI utilites.
Firmware is upgraded with LSI CLI utility that works in Windows. For Intel controllers I had to use EUFI update (pain of the neck for uninitiated). Cons: Hot. Reported temperature is around 63C – 65C in medium size case with power supply fan blowing almost directly to the controller’s CPU heatsink. I might have to add a fan on the front of the case to add airflow.
Only 4 drives can be connected (not an issue for me)
Does not come with a required cable. Newegg pricing for the cable is somewhat odd. Combined price (with shipping) goes down with the increase in length.
MegaRAID GUI interface is somewhat clunky but gets the job done. Overall Review: After running my home server (WHS2011) with drives connected to Intel chipset SATA ports I finally decided to use a “real” RAID controller. The main motivation was to get a controller with fast cache to eliminate annoying delays while opening directories and files. LSI controllers are sometimes picky with non server grade motherboards. I had my concerns but installation was totally uneventful in Asus P8Z68-V Pro/Gen3 motherboard. I use this controller for data drives only. WHS2011 boots from a drive connected to Intel chipset.
Overall very happy with the purchase. Everything feels very snappy without any delays. I enabled write-back in configuration and rely on UPS to avoid power loss and drive corruption (I know that it is not the same but good enough for me).

Pros: Very fast array creation and initialization. SATA 6Gb/s and SAS 12Gb/s interface capability. Will happily confirm the array integrity after a sudden power loss, unfortunately had to do it a few times before I broke down and bought the LSICVM02 addon kit, another $200. Read and write speeds are pretty amazing on this controller and the rated I/O performance feels like it’s there. SSD Guard feature ensures that TRIM is monitored and maintained. Cons: LSI has a tendency to nickle and dime their customers to death. The card is $589. If you want the security of array integrity in the event of a power/hardware failure that’s will require the BU and CacheVault units, another $200. The battery requires that you ALSO purchase a PCI slot mounting card for it to reside in (BBU-Bracket-05). I said bump that and zip-tied the battery to the back of the server case. If you want to utilize any of the “advanced” software configurations in the MegaRAID Utility that will cost you even more. I never checked how much cause I was over it at that point. Overall Review: I’m using this controller in a Dell Poweredge R710. The array is RAID 5 and consists of 5-Samsung 840Pro 256GB SSDs. I am running HyperV Server 2012r2 on that array and it is hosting 10 Windows server VMs. Everything runs great.

Pros: I put it in a CentOS 6 server with a MB ASROCK|Z97 PRO4 LGA 1150 R motherboard. It’s been 6 months and as I recall it installed with no trouble at all.
YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE there is enough cooling, I guess in a proper server case with really good ventilation it would be OK, but I put a 120mm fan blowing directly at it. It’s just the way it is, plan for it.
But, one the server came on-line and I started copying files to the server I was really happy with the speed, way faster than the integrated raid on the machine it was replacing Cons: $$$$$. that’s the only one I can think of. Starts at $600 but you really should purchase the LSI LSICVM02 CacheVault Accessory Kit for another $190 so you don’t lose the raid in a power outage. Overall Review: If money is not an issue this seems to be a good solution for a small business server. Just make sure it supports the MB and OS you use.

Pros: None Cons: Controller did not see supported hard drives even with supported hard drives and cables. Overall Review: LSI tech support suspected defected controller. Filed rma with newegg, who then sent me email saying
Thank you for requesting a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) at Newegg.

2.Qty. 1 –CacheVault Power Module (CVPM02) with 3″ cable, 10″ and 24″ remote cable extender
    3.Qty. 1 –CVPM clip
***PLEASE NOTIFY US OF YOUR COMPLIANCE PRIOR TO RETURNING THE REQUIRED MISSING ITEM(S), IF NOTICE IS NOT RECEIVED WITHIN 3 BUSINESS DAYS WE WILL CLOSE THIS RMA AND RETURN THE ITEM TO YOU***
Please return the item(s) to the same address and reference the same RMA number. We also strongly recommend avoiding shipping the item(s) in a standard envelope as many times the package is empty when it arrives at our facility.
I sent them a box with the controller in its original box and cache vault in the other original box and they are claiming I didnt send the cache vault back.
I am numb and nauseated at the loss of weeks and soon to be $800. I am betting this review will be deleted and my account blocked or something like that.

  6. Ryan B.

Overall Review: This is clearly a refurb unit. It did not come in retail packaging, just a brown envelope and anti-static bag in the inside with the card and cable. It only included the low profile PCIe slot bracket.
I have no problem with them selling a refurbished unit, but it should be clearly labeled as refurbished.

  7. Kevin F.

Pros: Packaged well and arrived on time, in original sealed box.
It worked and it’s fast. That’s all anyone can hope for when dealing with interfaces. Cons: Nothing to report. Overall Review: I will continue to purchase from this company and recommend this interface.

  8. Larry B.

Pros: easy set up Cons: card puts off lots of heat. set up extra fan for cooling Overall Review: still a great card
