Pros: Low power (for a Xeon) and easy to cool
Currently at a price/performance sweet spot for server CPUs. Cons: I’m not keen on the way this CPU has to be inserted into a carrier and then clipped to the heatsink before assembly, but did not experience any problems with this. Overall Review: I have this CPU running alongside another system with a Threadripper 2950X. According to benchmark data the Xeon is supposed to be just a little faster than the Threadripper. In practice I’m seeing at least a 2X difference because the Xeon doesn’t keep getting hot and thermal throttling. My Xeon has a compact air cooler, the AMD chip is water cooled (both are running Ubuntu).
8 channel memory is good for workloads that manipulate a large data set that doesn’t fit in the cache. There are other CPUs in the family that have a slightly faster memory interface, but you pay in both thermal power and price for those chips.
My only concern is I don’t like how much handling is needed to get the CPU into the motherboard. The CPU has to be clipped into a plastic carrier that is then clipped to the heatsink. All this handling makes me nervous about the potential for ESD damage and CPUs getting dropped on the floor.
