Asustor Nimbustor 4 Gen2 AS5404T 4 Bay NAS, Quad-Core 2.0GHz CPU, Dual 2.5GbE Ports, 4GB DDR4, Four M.2 SSD Slots (Diskless)

Pros: Easy to upgrade memory took sodimm ddr4 3200 16 gig. Qnap went to soldered on memory on new machines suppossedly due to a ram shortage so now you can not upgrade their ram so this was a HUGE no no for me. I was a Qnap lover, but a friend has a older version of this and I thought i’d give em a try.
Software looks almost identical to a Qnap so was easy for me to get in and go.
2×2.5 gb networking. it does transfer very quickly.
4X Gen 3 m.2 (NOTE THESE GET HOT). I used heat sinks for all 4 and have had zero problems. It’s worth a few bucks to toss heat sinks on em. if your only going to cache boost with em get small cheapies they run much cooler. Took a few tries to get the setup I wanted with my raid and SSD caching. This was a neck and neck with Qnap ts464. its cheaper and does the same stuff, but you can upgrade the ram. I have both this and the Qnap ts464 this is my favorite. This thing for Plex is a beast! transcodes multiple streams like a champ. Cons: I miss the little screen telling me the ip and such right on the front. Now we get this glossy finger print catching gloss black plastic with magnets. Drive trays are flimsy, but they do the job well. It is very very picky on what camera you can use for security, when it says you can add your own camera not in the list good luck with that. Ones in list were a dream to setup. Spend the extra 5 bucks get one in the list save yourself a headache if wanna use for security. Lesson learned here. The m.2’s get warm if you have all 4 populated, never had a problem or throttling,but was close till added heatsinks. Overall Review: I love this little beast its amazing. It has a extender that matches the case near perfectly but it’s almost as much as the NAS itself. HUH? Now if was an 8 bay for the price sure. But for a expansion….Thats a big Nope..Here Qnap wins they have a 4 bay expansion for about half that and it works great.
