Pros: – LOTS of PCIE lanes, 3GHz base, this is the perfect cpu. Cons: – Any existing ASRock EPYCD8 board or SuperMicro H11 that is not sold pre-packaged and tested with this Rome cpu is unlikely to ever support Rome because the bios chips are too small. Make sure you can download a supporting bios patch for the revision of your target board that supports this chip before attempting to upgrade. Pretty sure every SuperMicro H11 board on NewEgg that is not pre-bundled with a Rome cpu has the older revision 1.1 bios soldered down and will never be compatible.
    – Hopefully some time in the next year? Compatible boards will be available for this amazing cpu. Overall Review: Verified Rome 7002/7001 EPYCD8-T2 board now up on newegg does include the larger bios and works with this cpu. I am a happy camper.

Pros: – Performs so fast that I start giggling just thinking about it
    – Worked on first boot in my H12SSW-NT
    – Works with cheap (non-QVL) NEMIX DDR4-3200 ECC RAM, see my other review
    – Idle power consumption for the server using this CPU is 110w – lower than the Xeon E3-1240v2 system it’s replacing Cons: – I’ve bought used motorcycles that cost less than this CPU
    – Makes me want a Threadripper 3970X workstation Overall Review: If you pair this CPU with a motherboard that actually supports it, it’s an incredible CPU.
I’m running Debian buster, no idea how well it works with Windows. Linux booted and installed without any issues.
EDIT: updated Debian to Bullseye, running even better now. Migrated my Plex install to this machine and now I can transcode at least 3 4K files simultaneously on the CPU, when the E3-1240 couldn’t even transcode a single 4K stream in realtime. I remain absolutely over-the-moon about this CPU.

Overall Review: Almost all of the sellers of boxed EPYC processors are scammers. They will take your money and hold onto it for weeks to a month.

  4. Benjamin H.

Pros: Building a new file server coming from a consumer i5-9600K this is unbelievably fast. TrueNas does a good job utilizing all threads and it is really hard to load this CPU past 80%, if you load it down it just finishes the task. On paper it should be 5 times faster than my old cpu, I did pair it with 8 sticks of 16GB DDR4-3200 and it finishes work loads in a half hour that took the other “server” multi days to complete. The first render i gave it I thought it crashed because it finished it so quickly. Runs cool. Cons: Not free, I mean it is not new?? What gives?? Overall Review: 128 PCI lanes for a couple hundred more that a consumer chip, it is a data storage monster.
