Built for reliability

Redundant power

Reduce the chance that power disruptions on a single distribution channel or PDU causes data and service availability degradation.

Maximize service availability

When paired with another identical unit, Synology High Availability enables automatic minute-level failover between two clustered servers in the event of a server failure to minimize service downtime.

Data integrity and protection

ECC memory and the Btrfs file system bring higher reliability and snapshot capabilities to help prevent data corruption and simplify data protection.

Hyper Backup

A comprehensive backup and recovery solution for added data protection. Create backup destinations locally, on another Synology device, rsync servers, or cloud-based destinations, such as Google Drive, Dropbox, S3-compatible destinations, and Synology C2 Storage, a dedicated backup destination for Synology devices. Deduplication, integrity checks, and incremental transfer technology reduce bandwidth and storage use.

Snapshot Replication

Easily schedule flexible point-in-time backups of shared folders and LUNs with an RPO as low as 5 minutes and recovery in seconds. Set up replication and failover to other Synology storage systems for fast RTOs and minimal service disruption.

Protect your entire office with Active Backup

The Active Backup suite enables administrators to easily secure their entire IT infrastructure by backing up mission-critical data to their NAS, including Windows & Linux workstations and servers, file servers, VMware and Hyper-V virtual machines, and Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace accounts. Benefit from deduplication, multiversioning to quickly jump back in time, and additional data efficiency optimizations for reduced bandwidth and storage use.

Fully certified storage virtualization solutions

Synology iSCSI storage fully supports mainstream virtualization solutions to enhance work efficiency with an easy management interface. VMware vSphere 6 and VAAI integration helps offload storage operations. Windows Offloaded Data Transfer (ODX) speeds up data transfer. OpenStack Cinder support turns your Synology NAS into a block-based storage component. Additionally, Synology Storage Console enables even more simplified storage provisioning and management options in VMware and Windows environments.

Reviews (5)

5 reviews for Synology 8 bay RackStation RS1221RP+ Rackmount NAS (Diskless)

  1. EMBLEME Communication

    Pros: – Rackmount
    – Minimal dept (works with shallow racks)
    – Good cooling
    – Possibility of 2 PSU
    – Possibility of extra disks units *.
    – SSH is available for advanced system admin**.
*Read well on Synology website if you are planning to use it.
** DSM is NOT a regular linux release, so make SURE you know what you are doing. Refer to the documentation and community forum to learn more. Cons: – Not coming with the SSD Cache controller (or Dual 10gb network card / SSD controller)
    – Huts when it falls on your hand during installation (haha… but seriously, be careful it really hurts) Overall Review: Worth it !
I had few Regular DS with 4 disk then i bought the Synology 8 bay RackStation RS1221+ even if i was not really sure of the price difference worth it. It really does! When i received, I opened it and added RAM. It was really easy because everything is well designed and placed inside. The cooling system is basic but efficient.
We are doing an extensive use and everything is stable.

  2. My ears hurt

Pros: Not sure, it’s so loud that it’s unusable, so it’s either going in the trash or getting hacked to replace the horrible PSUs/PSU fans. Cons: LOUD. Really REALLY loud. Overall Review: This unit is extremely loud. Don’t get it unless you are putting it in a sound-isolated location, as the dual PSUs have no fan control options and the cheap fans they used are louder than a jet. If you are set on this product line, get the RS1221+, as you can replace its internal fans with quieter ones and all is good. I replaced the internal fans on my RS1221RP+, but the PSU fans are so loud that you would never be able to tell. I powered the unit on for around 3 hours, and had to shut it down due to the noise. Here I am 2 hours later and my ears still hurt. Shame on you Synology, you cheaped out on the PSUs and I’m officially done with you!

  3. Thomas F.

Pros: Unit price and Features Cons: The RS Series are LOUD. I was prepared for louder but not idling 737 airplane. And this one, with redundant power supplies is made louder. We have always utilized a Rack for our server and network hardware to save space. But, it is not in its own soundproof room.
To compare, this one device, with its 8 Synology branded drives, generates more noise than my 2 old servers, with their 4 external RAIDs. Each server hs 4 or 8 drives inside. Plus there are 2 massive rackmount UPS systems. They just make mild hum all day everyday.
The RS1221RP+ should come with an OSHA warning Overall Review: Only recommend if it is going in a sound isolating room. Otherwise, buy a DS series.
