Overall Review: The hard drives are easy to install and the software (dsm) is very good. Not easy like the DS-923+ but something anyone can do.
But, the fan is very, very loud. Every time it goes in hibernation, the fan makes an airplane noise like everything’s going to break. It cannot be used onsite while people are working next to it.
Also, upon booting up, RAM is at 34% use with nothing going on with the NAS. That’s to say, the OS and all services running like ghosts in the background eat up a third of the RAM. It’s already light on that aspect, 34% less is just worst.
I’d recommend stepping up and buying something with a better build.

Pros: – I wanted to stop paying google for cloud storage (photos and vids) and this does the trick.
– You have a lot of control and there are a surprising number of things you can do with this unit
– I got pretty addicted to messing around with it. If you like tinkering this is a blast.
– If you want to manually transfer large amounts of data, this is much faster than google. Cons: – Ok, big warning. I did not think I needed hardware transcoding, thought that was for pros. It turns out most of my home vids would not play in my browser of choice and basically did not work over their app.
– I fixed this by batch converting to H.264, then using Tailscale to bypass using quickconnect. This worked really well, but was a manual process many might not be into….If you want things to just work you might need a higher end unit.
– If you just want to plug this in and use it….you can, but you might struggle. There is a bit of a steep learning curve. If that’s not for you, maybe try beestation or something. I wanted control though. If you are coming from google you are exchanging convenience for control.
– Price point makes it hard to justify leaving google storage, we are talking 3-4 year payback minimum.
– Security can be a little confusing? Stick to quickconnect if you want to keep it simple. You can get yourself in trouble if you mess around too much. Overall Review: Once I figured out how to set everything up this unit does everything I want it to do. That being said your H.265 vids will not stream well on this unit without using its integrated conversion tool or doing it yourself. I know I listed a lot of cons, but its just so you know what your are getting into. Overall I love it, and its been a lot of fun, just make sure it suits your needs.
