Pros: Solid design, good hardware
Wide open interior, room for pretty much anything
Nearly all ATX motherboards should fit perfectly
Good quality fans move plenty of air
Ducted air handling should keep CPU and RAM cool (if the air shroud fits on your motherboard)
Redundant power supplies a huge plus (and arguably essential for servers)
1200W is enough power for most realistic configurations Cons: The “universal” air shroud is fiddly to install and only really works with certain motherboards. You’ll likely have to leave parts off to make it fit, and it may not fit at all with some motherboards.
The fans aren’t quiet enough for desktop use. (Not a problem for me, as I’m using it as a server.)
You may need to supply your own SAS/SATA cables, if the included ones aren’t right for your motherboard or controller card. Overall Review: Figuring out how to make the air shroud fit (by removing and/or breaking off pieces) was annoying, but I can’t see how they could do much better in a generic case meant to fit multiple motherboard layouts. Any “universal” air shroud is never going to be truly universal. I was glad I was able to make it fit, as it should improve cooling. Routing cables around it is a pain though. I imagine a lot of people will choose to leave it out, and many motherboard layouts probably won’t allow its use at all.
It’s a good case, although it’s somewhat compromised by trying to make it work for both desktop and rackmount use. My main reason for choosing it was that I needed a cheap GPU server using consumer grade cards (Geforce RTX 3090) which don’t fit in a typical server chassis. These tower/rack-convertible options are among the few that are tall enough to hold consumer-grade GPUs that are otherwise too tall for most rackmount cases.
Anyway, I put a X12DPi-N6 motherboard into this case, with two Xeon Silver 4316 CPUs, four Micron 64 GB DDR4-3200 DIMMs, a 2TB Kingston SNV2S SSD, a 12 TB Seagate Exos X18 hard drive, and a Geforce RTX 3090 GPU. I had to buy my own SAS cables (SFF-8643 to SFF-8087) as both the motherboard and chassis came with different SAS/SATA cables but neither one had the correct type to connect this Supermicro Chassis to the Supermicro motherboard. 🤦🏻♂
