  1. Christopher W.

    Pros: Low Cost
    Reliable Power Supply
    Light Weight
    Includes Blower
Fits Most SM motherboards directly Cons: Single Fan Setup
    HDD Layout is very Tight
Non SM Motherboards can be used, but without Backplates.
FrontPanel connector designed exclusively for SM motherboards – Requires adaptation for other MB brands Overall Review: I have 10 servers that use these cases. All of which have been running for roughly 3 years. The power supply that comes with these cases is very reliable. This is a great benefit considering the low cost of these cases. You can use non SuperMicro motherboards, in these cases, but you will be left without a backplate, and it will require adaptation of the front panel i/o conector. All but 2 of my server are SM motherboards, so it has not been much of an issue for me.

Pros: I have been running production environment with these cases without a problem. Power Supply is very reliable and if you get the right SuperMicro motherboard, you can build a nice server for a very good price. Couple that with the correct CPU and vent shroud and hard drive… then you got yourself a nice system. Cons: It does require a bit of work to route Sata cables if you are using mirror configuration. There are no slide rackmount rails. It only has 2 screws that mounts in the front. So ensure you plan your deployment right if you need to provide maintenance with minimum downtime. Overall Review: I highly recommend this chassis if you are working with a tight constraint for budget and power. The chassis is very good, and if you configure the system correctly, then you have a nice server you can count on in a production environment. I have over 15 of these server running Windows Server behind F5

Pros: The case actually fits more super micro motherboards then what is listed. I am using a X10SLL-F-0 edition motherboard from supermicro and it fit. According to their website it said it wouldn’t fit or work. Yet it does. I like the fact that the case comes with both types of back plates as I can easily put the right back plate to match. Which gives a professional look that my customer will like. Air cooling is efficient and comes with extra plastic walls to keep air flowing in the right direction. I recommend using a SSD drives for this unit as the cooling is past the front drive cage and doesn’t off much air flow for the hard drives. But again this is typical in a 1U case. Great handles on the unit that are solid to make it easier to lift into the rack. Cons: Stock cooler doesn’t fit but kind of expected since this is a 1U case. Everything 1U you need to order a separate cooling unit for it to work. Power cables for the HD are too long and not necessary to be that long. Had to tie up more cable in a tight cramped space. Power supply is weird. it has an 8 Pin 12 volt rail and a 20 pin power connector. This normally is not a problem because it can be adapted for smaller. Just seems odd. I removed an egg from this review because the power supply has a little hummm noise that is a little annoying. I might need to investigate this further to see if this is a problem or by design. Overall Review: Over all this is a great case. But when you purchase a supermicro case be sure to get a supermicro motherboard. They don’t fit anything else. I attempted to line up another ASRock server motherboard and it won’t fit properly. Not that I was intending to use the ASRock, just wanted to see if the motherboard contacts were in a different position. They are. then again supermicro server motherboards are great and have all the professional perks of the higher class server motherboards.

  4. Zackery D.

    Pros: Small.
    Lightweight.
Relatively easy to work with… To a point.
Not much else. Cons: There are several cons to this case and I’m going to RMA it. (It’s still useful for someone else I’m sure.)
First and foremost, the front panel header is made for Supermicro Motherboards only. It will not and cannot be modified to work with Asrock Rack boards or similar. Even if the board fits you will have to either end up hardware modding the case or buying a Supermicro board instead.
Secondly is the placement of the HDD(s) in the case. They are not high enough for airflow under them, it will KILL your drive if it is not in a cold datacenter. There was also no protection from shorts under the drive. (Bare steel)
Going on the drive placement itself, is it’s right next to the center fan. Wouldn’t be a problem if I could perhaps plug in a SATA power plug into my drive… The drive is mounted so low that the included PSU SATA power plug would not actually go on without breaking my drive apart. (An HGST he8 8TB drive.) Sata cable has to make a direct 90 degree bend upwards from my drive in order to actually run the sata cable correctly in the case. (Perhaps my very expensive drive used non-standard placement of sata-power and sata-data alignment? I highly doubt this was the case.)
The back of the case is not fitting or friendly to other motherboard back plates. (use supermicro board.)
Aside from the potential HDD killing design flaws there is one minor detail that won’t’ affect the server’s operation however I find it’s one detail that is just a very obvious representation of the case in general…
The center fan. It looks like it’s held in place by two screws right? It’s actually held in place by gravity and two screw-posts. These screws do nothing to keep the fan down rather these posts keep it aligned. I can lift the fan out without unscrewing the posts. Overall Review: It’s a useable case. Very popular in fact.
I recommend using this case with 1-2 3.5″ > 2.5″ drive bay adapters with bottom-mount screw holes. This is critical because the HDD bay adapters will need to mount from the bottom holes instead of on the sides.
With 2.5″ drives there will be no HDD cooling issues (Considering the drive is cool-running), open air, no short-out risks and most of all easy to cable up the drive.
About the 3 egg rating. If this case was marketed as a 2.5″ drive case with 3.5″ capabilities I would have given it 5 stars. Being marketed as a 3.5″ drive case leads to many many frustrations, I imagine I am not the only one that has bought this and realized it is unfit for my purpose.
Other notes: I bought ram that was too high for 1U, That was my fault. No fault of the case there.

    Pros: easy to set up.
accepts many mother boards. Cons: does not accept other manufacture back plates.
(Need cable CBL-0084L) for power switch if you do not go with supermicro mother board
intel heat sink and fan is too tall, aftermarket is needed. Overall Review: customer service responded quickly about power button cable issue. very happy with them.

  6. Marc-André J.

Pros: – Case is well built, worthy of SuperMicro quality
    – Case is well ventilated, great for rack
    – Cheap considering it comes with a PSU! Cons: – 20 Pins ATX, not a 24 Pins
    – 8 Pins CPU cable, not 2×4, nor 1×4
    – Front plane is not standard, except for SuperMicro motherboard. Requires CBL-0084L extra part to convert one to another.
    – IO shield isn’t ATX format. Running without an IO shield isn’t the best
    – Main case fan cable is rather short, have to run it over the RAM/CPU cooler. Overall Review: We ended up buying another PSU because of the 20 + 8 Pins weirdness. Our motherboard wouldn’t post properly without the full 24 + 4 pins. If you are not running this case with a SuperMicro motherboard, expect major headache.

Pros: Great condition, arrived a day early Overall Review: Still waiting on my motherboard and the rest of my parts for build, but the chassis is exactly what I was looking for! So light and small compared to my aging tower PC server. Arrived a day early and very pleased. Recommended.

  8. Anonymous

Pros: It’s pretty great. Cons: had to buy additional cable for front panel Overall Review: It doesn’t supports taller RAM kits. Make sure you’re buying 33mm or smaller RAM kits. Overall still recommended and will buy more
