Pros: Easy to setup. Nice UI. Aesthetically pleasing unit. 2.5 gig NIC. Not much taller than the drives themselves. Cons: Fan is sometimes noisy. Not sure if that’s just when it spins up or has to go faster for greater cooling. I may take it off my desk and put it in a cabinet. Overall Review: So far so good. Really nice unit. Definitely faster than my other NAS (single SSD) with a 1 gig NIC. (I am running the default RAID 1 on this Buffalo NAS with the native spinning rust drives. I have not tested SSDs in this unit.)
3 is 2. 2 is 1. 1 is none. — Some of the other NAS companies have plug-ins that link directly to some online backup providers (e.g. Carbonite, iDrive, etc.). This unit does not have that capability. However, per my offsite backup provider’s instructions I just created mapped network drives to the NAS (not just linking under Networks but actually mapping the drive with a drive letter) and then backup those mapped network drives via the app/program that’s always running on, and backing up, my computer. I like this setup even better because it eliminates a potential weak point in the backup chain – that you don’t have a separate login on the NAS, to the cloud backup solution, that could get broken. I hope that makes sense.
You do need a 2.5 gig switched network to take advantage of it. Don’t need the router to be 2.5 gig if the computers accessing the NAS, and the NAS, are on the same switch. (e.g. In my case it goes Router –> 1 gig switch —> 2.5 gig switch —> NAS & computer) So, in my case the NAS change was not just the cost of the NAS, but a good 2.5 gig switch as well… Oh, darn… Just kidding.
No hiccups along the way. Really happy with the whole thing.
